In this post love2teachandlearn (Mrs. T.) will share every awesome detail related to how to easily set-up these 11 incredible Winter Olympics PE Stations.
Hi there, it’s so great to meet you! I’m Mrs. T. (or you can call me Jen) – a Michigan mom, wife, new grandma (aka “Jemma”) and K-12 PE teacher who has also taught Kindergarten, 3rd, and 6th grades.
I love teaching PE class because I get to spend time telling silly sports jokes and exercising while laughing with my students.
I’m also on a serious mission to MAKE SCHOOL FUN AGAIN and these WINTER OLYMPICS PE STATIONS are a great way to to just that!
READY! SET! LET’S PLAY!
Station #1: SNOWBOARDING
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- 2-4 BALANCE BOARDS
- KIDS READY TO HAVE A BLAST!
PE STATION SET-UP: Simply place 2-4 balance boards in the area where you want your snowboarding station to be. That’s it!
HOW TO PLAY: Students stand on balance boards with feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, and arms out for balance as they gently rock side-to-side. Remind students to keep their hands ready to catch themselves if they tip, one student per board at all times, and to stop immediately if they feel unsteady!
*STATION TIP: You can often find inexpensive balance boards at Goodwill Stores and at garage sales in the summer!
Station #2: FIGURE SKATING
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- PAPER PLATES, JUGGLING SCARVES or SOCKS
- KIDS READY TO HAVE A BLAST!
PE STATION SET-UP: Simply place a basket filled with paper plates and/or juggling scarves in the area where you want your station area to be.
If you don’t have paper plates or scarves you can always have the kids just take their shoes off and skate around in their socks.
HOW TO PLAY: Kids slide gracefully across the gym floor on paper plates under their feet, or scarves tied around their shoes, while pretending to do jumps, spins, and poses.
Students can hold partners’ hands for spins, create special and unique skating moves or even a short ice dance routine.
*STATION TIP: Laminated pieces of paper make pretty good skates too!
Station #3: CURLING
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- 2-4 DISC CONES
- A Few TENNIS BALLS
- STICKY NOTES
- CLEAR PACKAGING TAPE
PE STATION SET-UP: Place a few disc cones, as well as a few tennis balls in a basket in the area where you want your station to be.
Then, create a “House” or target area, placing different valued sticky notes down, by taping them to the gym floor. Place a giant star cutout in the middle of the target area, making this area worth the most points.
HOW TO PLAY: Students take turns pushing/sliding the disc cones (Stones) toward the (House) or target area. Students earn points based on where their stone lands.
They can keep track of their own points and when it’s time to rotate, the student or team with the most points wins!
I like to have my students play in partner groups, using different colored disc cones to separate the teams.
*STATION TIP: Be sure to place a tennis ball under the disc cone to give it some weight and help it to slide easier. And, if you don’t have disc cones you can easily just use different colored bean bags.
Station #4: SKI JUMPING
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- 1 LARGE, LONG MAT
- SMALL STACKABLE MATS or ONE TALL MAT
- 2 POOL NOODLES (Ski Poles)
- MEASURING TAPE or DIFFERENT COLORED CONES (for measuring jump distance)
- DRY ERASE BOARD and MARKER
PE STATION SET-UP: Place the long mat on the floor and the stackable mats or tall mat a few feet in front of it. Then place the pool noodles, soft measuring tape, cones, dry erase board and marker in a basket.
HOW TO PLAY: Students take turns getting a running start with pool noodles (ski poles) in hands, jumping onto the snow hill (tall mat) and then jumping as far as they can, landing on the long mat.
Students can use the measuring tape to measure each other’s jumps and record their name and jump distances on the dry erase board.
*STATION TIP: You can easily use different colored cones to mark jump distances too if you don’t want to use a measuring tape.
Station #5: BOBSLED
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- SCOOTERS
- OLD BENT HULA HOOPS
PE STATION SET-UP: Place scooters and old, bent, hula hoops in the area of the gym where you want your station to be.
HOW TO PLAY: Students take turns pulling and/or pushing each other on the bobsled. I like to set up a cone at the far end of the station zone and have the kids race around the cone with the bobsled.
*This is a very fun and popular station – just make sure you go over scooter safety rules with your students first.
*STATION TIP: Old and bent hula hoops work great for pulling students on scooters. If you don’t have hula hoops, you can easily use jump ropes (but not the beaded ones-they will definitely break).
Station #6: SPEED SKATING
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- JUGGLING SCARVES or PAPER PLATES (These will be your ice skates)
- CONES
- POPSICLE STICKS
PE STATION SET-UP: Simply place a basket filled with the paper plates and/or juggling scarves, as well as the popsicle sticks in the area where want your station to be. Then, line a large oval (rink area) with the cones.
HOW TO PLAY: Students race around the cones on their skates, collecting a popsicle stick after each successful trip.
When the station ends and it’s time to rotate, the students count up how many sticks they collected and the one with the most sticks wins.
Station #7: ICE HOCKEY
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- RUBBER HOCKEY STICKS
- RUBBER HOCKEY PUCKS
- FAKE SKATES (Scarves, Paper Plates, Laminated Paper, or Socks)
- PORTABLE NET (2 if you have the space)
PE STATION SET-UP: Simply place a bin with the hockey sticks, pucks, and fake skates in the area where you want your station to be. Then place the portable net(s) against a wall.
HOW TO PLAY: Students wear their “fake skates” and practice shooting the hockey puck into the net. You can also have your students play a mini hockey game (2 vs 2) if you want.
*STATION TIP: If you don’t have hockey sticks you can use long pool noodles or broomsticks instead. And, if you don’t have hockey pucks, you can use fake snowballs, bean bags, shower loofahs, yarn balls, or disc cones.
Station #8: CREATE YOUR OWN OLYMPIC EVENT
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- CLIPBOARDS
- PENCILS
- BLANK COMPUTER PAPER
PE STATION SET-UP: Simply place a bin with the clipboards, pencils, and paper in the area where you want your station to be.
HOW TO PLAY: Allow students to brainstorm together to create a new and unique winter olympic event.
*STATION TIP: It’s fun to set aside time during another PE class for your students to present their “new events” to their classmates.

Station #10: SNOWBALL FIGHT
I realize that a snowball fight is not one of the official Winter Olympic events, however, I like to work this station into my Winter Olympics PE Stations rotation because the kids love it and truly have so much.
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- FAKE SNOWBALLS (I order mine from Amazon)
- KIDS READY TO HAVE A BLAST
PE STATION SET-UP: Place a basket filled with the fake snowballs in the area where you want your station to be.
HOW TO PLAY: Simply let the kids have a total blast having a giant snowball fight with their friends.
Station #11: OLYMPIC COLOR BALLOON BOP
A Balloon Bop Station complete with Blue, Yellow, Black, Green, and Red Balloons is a great way to Kick off Your Winter Olympics Celebration by teaching your students that these specific colors represent the unity of the five inhabited continents of the world (Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania) and, together with the white background, were chosen to represent the Olympics because every national flag includes at least one of these colors, showing that the Games are for the whole world.
SUPPLIES NEEDED for this Station:
- A BUNCH OF BLUE, YELLOW, BLACK, GREEN, and RED BALLOONS
- KIDS READY TO HAVE A BLAST
PE STATION SET-UP: Place a large garbage bag with the balloons inside, in the area of the gym where you want to set up this station.
HOW TO PLAY: Kids love balloons so much. Just dump out the bag of balloons and let them have a blast playing Keepy Uppy with the 5 Olympic Rings-Colored Balloons!

I’ve been running Pe Stations with my students for many years now and feel like I have a pretty good system set up that helps my stations run pretty darn smoothly.
Here are a few PE Station Set-Up Tips for you that have worked really well for me over the years.
PE Station Tips for You
- GROUP SIZE: Try to keep your station groups between 3-5 students. Anything more or less than that can make things a bit challenging.
- CONE MARKERS: I like to use bright colored, medium-sized cones to mark my different stations. I also number each station by simply writing or typing numbers on a piece of paper and taping it to the cones.
- EQUIPMENT: I like to put a basket with all equipment needed for that station next to each numbered cone.
- STATION ROTATION: I have found that having my students rotate from numbered cone to numbered cone in a counter-clockwise direction works really well. So, when it’s time to rotate, the kids at Station #1 will go to #2, #2 goes to #3, and those at #4 will rotate to Station #1.
- USE MUSIC: I love using music in the gym – not only is it fun for the kids and I to listen to but it seriously works as the absolute best classroom management tool. My rule is: MUSIC ON-Your Turn, MUSIC OFF – My Turn! When I stop the music, my students know that it is time to rotate WITH THEIR STATION GROUP MEMBERS to their next station. Once everyone is at their next station – start the music back up again.
Happy Olympics
