FOOD WARS: K-5 Teamwork, Dodging and Fleeing PE Game
FOOD WARS is a must-have TEAMWORK, DODGING and FLEEING PE Game for any elementary physical education curriculum.
Get your elementary Phys Ed students energized and engaged with this Strategy and Tactics, Space, Direction and Speed Game.
Designed by and for physical education teachers, this exciting gym game puts a super fun, fast-paced twist on the classic game of Keep-Away or Capture the Flag.
Students will love the challenge of this easy-to-play whole class strategy and tactics team game which also gives them plenty of opportunity to work on their locomotor skills and even do some math and counting.
This dodging and fleeing PE game is always a big hit and my fifth grade students love this game just as much as my kindergarten PE students because it is non-stop action and loads of fun!
As a matter of fact, I’ve started playing FOOD WARS with my middle school and high school physical education classes and they’ve been loving it!
FOOD WARS: Dodging and Fleeing PE Game
Hi there, it’s so great to meet you! I’m Mrs. T. or you can call me Jen – a Michigan mom, wife, new grandma (aka “Jemma”) and K-12 PE teacher who is on a mission to MAKE SCHOOL FUN AGAIN!
I love teaching PE class because I get to spend time telling silly jokes and exercising while laughing with my sweet students.
So, if you’re ready to dive into some serious physical education fun – Let’s get to it!
READY, SET – LET’S PLAY!
EQUIPMENT NEEDED
To play this FOOD WARS Dodging and Fleeing PE game, you’ll need a few pieces of equipment including:
- 4 Different Colored HULA HOOPS or BASKETS
- 3-4 POOL NOODLES (for tagging)
- FOOD SQUISHIES or BEAN BAGS
- K-5 STUDENTS READY TO HAVE AN ABSOLUTE BLAST!
EASY GAME SET-UP
FIRST, divide your students into 4 teams. Give each team a different colored hula hoop or a basket and place in the 4 corners of the gym.
NEXT, Place the food squishies or bean bags in a circle in the middle of the gym and choose one team to be the defenders.
Defenders should each get a pool noodle to tag with and stand inside the circle of “food.”
FINALLY, the 3 other teams should stand in a line next to their hula hoop, waiting for the game to begin.
HOW TO PLAY – Food Wars
When this Dodging and Fleeing PE game begins, students on the 3 non-defending teams run out to the “circle of food” and try to sneak or grab a piece of food and bring it back to their hula hoop/basket without getting tagged by a defender.
Defenders must have at least one foot inside of the circle when they are tagging.
If a student gets tagged by a defender, they must go back and tag their hula hoop/basket before they can go back out and attempt to steal another piece of food.
If they have a piece of food in their hand while they get tagged by a defender, they must put the food back on the line, then head back and tag their hula hoop/basket before trying again.
If a student steals a piece of food successfully without getting tagged, they run it back and put it in their team’s hula hoop or basket.
At the end of the round, the team that collects the most food gets a point. Play 4 rounds with each team getting a chance to be defenders.
GAME TEACHING TIPS
TIP #1: It’s fun to play silly food-related songs like “It’s Raining Tacos” when playing this awesome dodging and fleeing pe game. Sometimes I let the defenders pick what song they want me to play during their round of play as defenders. So Fun!
TIP #2: Sometimes I have the kids add up their squishies after each round awarding them 1 point for each food item collected. I still play 4 rounds, adding up the total points and declaring that team the overall winner.
TIP #3: You can buy some pretty inexpensive food squishies from Amazon. Better yet – if you live in a state that has garage sales in the summer, keep your eye out because you can usually find some for super cheap.
But, if you don’t have food squishies, you can easily just use colorful bean bags.
GAME OVER
Your students will LOVE this twist on “Capture the Flag” and will seriously have so much FUN!
