How to Play: HOOP HUSTLE RELAY
Hi there, it’s so great to meet you! I’m Mrs. T. (Love 2 Teach and Learn) or you can call me Jen – a Michigan mom, wife, new grandma (aka “Jemma”) and K-12 PE teacher who has also taught Kindergarten, 3rd, and 6th grades.
I love teaching PE class because I get to spend time telling silly jokes and exercising while laughing with my students.
Teachers and kids spend a lot of time at school, which is why I am on a serious mission to MAKE SCHOOL FUN AGAIN.
And this awesome PE games is great way to start doing just that.
So, what do you say?
READY! SET! LET’S PLAY!
Hoop Hustle Relay is so much fun. I just know you are going to love playing it with your K-5 physical education classes this school year.
Equipment Needed

You will need a few pieces of equipment to play this super fun relay team game including:
- HULA HOOPS (20-30 or more)
- 2-4 BEAN BAGS (one bean bag for each team)
- KIDS READY TO HAVE TONS OF FUN
Easy Game Set-Up
FIRST, divide your class (depending on size) into two, three, or four relay teams and have them line up at one end of the gym.
THEN, give each team one colored bean bag.
NEXT, place one hula hoop a few feet in front of each relay team.
FINALLY, place all of the extra hula hoops in a pile on the floor at the opposite end of the gym.

Easy Game Directions
OBJECT OF THE GAME – Build the longest hula hoop chain!
When the game begins, the first person in line for each team will underhand throw the bean bag, trying to get it to land in the hula hoop in front of them.
- If they MISS, they simply pick up the bean bag, run it back, give it to the next person on their team, and go to the end of the line.
- If the bean bag successfully lands inside the hula hoop, they grab the bean bag and give it to the next team member in line. Then they quickly run down to the hula hoop pile, choose 1 hoop, run it back and lay it next to the first hoop, making a chain.
- Once all of the hula hoops from the pile are gone, students may then steal one hoop from another relay team when they have a successful throw. This is where strategy and teamwork comes into play.
*The team that builds the longest chain WINS the Hoop Hustle Relay game!
Game Tips for Hoop Hustle Relay

TIP 1: Your class size will determine how many relay teams you have. This game works best if you keep your relay teams between 3-5 kids.
TIP 2: Depending on age, grade, and skill level, adjust the distance of the first hoop to meet those needs and ensure kids feel successful with their underhand throwing.
TIP 3: Bean bags can be thrown into any hoop in the team’s chain and be considered a good throw.
TIP 4: This game is a super fun way to practice Underhand Throwing, Strategic Thinking, and Teamwork.
It’s also a great game for assessing your students’ underhand throwing skills at the end of a unit.
