ICE CREAM TAG: Fun and Easy K-5 Elementary PE Game

This ICE CREAM TAG game is a definite PE favorite. It’s an easy and fun tag game that can be enjoyed by kindergarten through fifth grade students.

Ice cream tag makes for the perfect main game or PE warm-up activity in the Gym. It keeps students active while promoting physical fitness, improving cardiovascular health and reinforcing key skills including STRIKING and BALANCE.

Ice Cream Tag - Striking and Balance PE Game

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

Ice Cream Tag Equipment Needed

For this game you will need:

  • 1 HULA HOOP
  • 3-4 POOL NOODLES (for tagging)
  • GATOR SKIN BALLS (about 6)
  • SMALL CONES (about 6)
  • BOWL with PLASTIC GOLD COINS (or small bean bags)

GAME SET-UP

First, choose 3-4 students to be the ice cream taggers. Give each tagger a pool noodle and send them to the middle of the gym. Then, have all other students each grab 3 gold coins, 1 cone and 1 Gator Skin or small/medium ball (ice cream scoop).

GAME DIRECTIONS – How to Play

OBJECT: The taggers try to use their pool noodles to knock the balls (ice cream) off of the cones.

When the game begins, all students with ice cream must run around and balance their ball on their cone. They can’t hold the ball on the cone with their other hand.

Taggers work together to knock the balls off of the cones and collect coins. If a ball is knocked off of a classmate’s cone they must give the tagger one of their coins. The tagger then runs the coin over to the hula hoop (collecting spot) before heading out to try & knock off another ice cream scoop.

At the end of the round, have the taggers count up how many coins they were able to collect during the round. Switch taggers, and have all students with cones restart with 3 coins. Play as many rounds needed so that everyone gets to be an ice cream tagger.

GAME TEACHING TIPS

TIP 1:  You can find the plastic gold coins at just about any Party Store, Dollar Store or on Amazon.  If you don’t have coins, you can easily use small bean bags or any other small item (blocks, Unifix cubes, etc.) instead.

TIP 2: I like to have the kids put the coins in the bottom of the cone while they are playing. It works out perfectly so they don’t drop them while they are running around.

TIP 3: I also like to make a rule where if they run out during the round, they wave their hands & ask for help & another friend can share a coin with them and get them back in the game.

TIP 4: It’s fun to play an upbeat ICE CREAM song when I play this game with my students. My two favorites are: 1. “ICE CREAM FREEZE (Let’s Chill)” by Hannah Montana 2. “ICE CREAM” by Mini Pop Kids.

So, why not blast some “clean” and upbeat PE music and bring the excitement of ICE CREAM TAG to your gymnasium TODAY!
