Equipment Needed

LUCKY PIN equipment needed - Love 2 Teach and Learn

For this Awesome team game you will need a few pieces of equipment including:

  • 10-12 White Bowling Pins
  • 10-20 Soft Balls
  • 2 Bowling Pins (Different Color than white)
  • Kids ready to have TONS OF FUN!

Easy Game Set-Up

Game Set-Up - Love 2 Teach and Learn

FIRST, spread six white bowling pins and one *LUCKY* pin (different color) out across one of the black baselines or end lines in the gym.

THEN, set up the other seven bowling pins on the opposite baseline.

NEXT, divide class into two teams and have them line up facing each other (see diagram).

FINALLY, line up all of the balls on the middle line of the gym.

How to Play: LUCKY PIN

The OBJECT OF THE GAME is to be the first team to knock down all 7 bowling pins on the other team’s side OR the team to have the most pins still standing when the song ends or the teacher decides the round/game is over.

When the game begins:

  • Students must stay on their team’s half of the gym – they cannot cross the midline.
  • Students can THROW, ROLL, or KICK the balls (one at a time) in an attempt to knock down the other team’s pins.
  • Students can guard the pins but no part of their body can touch the pin when they are guarding it. If they accidentally knock their own pin down – I say “too bad, so sad,” & the pin must stay down.
  • If a student catches a ball in the air from the other team they can turn around and choose ONE knocked down pin to set back up.

*If the *LUCKY PIN* gets knocked down, the team that knocked it down gets to pick up ALL of the pins that are knocked down on their side.

Game Teaching Tips

TIP 1: The sweet spot for this game is Grades 2-5. For the littles, I just adjust the distance of the pins depending on age/grade level. Sometimes, I let the kids work together as a team to strategically place and spread out the pins on their own side. They love this.

TIP 2: I like to use softer balls, like gator skin and playground balls, for this game so that nobody gets hurt if they get hit with a ball. No Volleyball, Basketballs or Soccer Balls!

TIP 3: I tell my classes that the game is over when one team knocks all 7 pins down – OR the song ends and the team with the most pins still standing, wins the game or gets a point.  We play best 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5 games.

TIP 4: ANOTHER SUPER FUN GAME VARIATION: If a team knocks down the *LUCKY PIN* that team automatically wins the game!

Trust me – your students will be asking to play *LUCKY PIN* over and over again!
