Hi there, it’s so great to meet you! I’m Mrs. T. (or you can call me Jen) – a Michigan mom, wife, new grandma (aka “Jemma”) and K-12 PE teacher who has also taught Kindergarten, 3rd, and 6th grades.
I love teaching PE class because I get to spend time telling silly sports jokes and exercising while laughing with my students.
I’m also on a serious mission to MAKE SCHOOL FUN AGAIN and this MUSICAL DRIBBLES physical education game is an awesome way to do just that!
READY! SET! LET’S PLAY!
Equipment Needed
For this game you will need:
- BASKETBALLS – (One for Each Student)
- POLY SPOTS (One for Each Student)
- MUSIC SOURCE
- GYM with BASKETBALL HOOPS (This is optional but helps when students get out in this game)
MUSICAL DRIBBLES – Game Setup
FIRST, give each student their own basketball.
THEN, have them spread out around the outside perimeter of the gym.
NEXT, place the Poly Spots (one for each student) in a circle formation in the middle of your gym.
FINALLY, choose a fun, upbeat song, to play.
How to Play: MUSICAL DRIBBLES
When the teacher starts the music, students should practice dribbling their basketballs in a counter-clockwise direction around the outside perimeter of the gym.
When the teacher stops the music, students dribble quickly (but still in control of the basketball) to an open Poly Spot in the middle of the gym, standing on an open spot, hugging their basketball.
- Repeat for 1-2 rounds until the students get used to the game. Then begin removing one poly spot after each round, eliminating one student each time.
- When a student gets eliminated, send them to a nearby basketball hoop to work on shooting – a great way to keep kids happy and still active even when they get out of the game.
- The last student left WINS the game!
Bonus Game Teaching Tips
TIP 1: This game can easily be played with all grades/age levels. For younger kids (K-2) you may want to use playground balls, instead of regular basketballs.
TIP 2: This game works great for practicing soccer dribbling too. I often use bean bags before introducing actual soccer balls – it works AMAZING!
TIP 3: It works best if you can secretly stop the music. I have an Apple watch that pairs with my gym speaker so I can control the music secretly that way. It makes the game more fair and more fun too.
