It’s a super easy to teach and play PE game that combines the excitement of the classic board game, CHUTES and LADDERS, with key basketball dribbling, passing, and shooting challenges.

I like to play this game with my PE students as a culmination to my basketball unit, and after I’ve taught dribbling, passing, and shooting skills – it’s a great skill assessment game too.

SHOOTS and LADDERS is a definite MUST-HAVE for your PE teacher toolkit.

Love 2 Teach and Learn

Hi there, it’s so great to meet you! I’m Mrs. T. (or you can call me Jen) – a Michigan mom, wife, new grandma (aka “Jemma”) and K-12 PE teacher who has also taught Kindergarten, 3rd, and 6th grades.

I love teaching PE class because I get to spend time telling silly sports jokes and exercising while laughing with my students.

I’m also on a serious mission to MAKE SCHOOL FUN AGAIN and this SHOOTS and LADDERS physical education game is an awesome way to to just that!

READY! SET! LET’S PLAY!

Equipment Needed

SHOOTS and LADDERS Basketball PE Game - Equipment Needed

For this game you will need:

  • 16 – 20 HULA HOOPS
  • 2 RUBBER CHICKENS (One for Each Team)
  • 2 BASKETBALLS (One for Each Team)
  • 6 POLY SPOTS (2 of Each Color)
  • GYM with 2 BASKETBALL HOOPS

SHOOTS and LADDERS – Game Setup

SHOOTS and LADDERS - Basketball PE Game (Set-Up)

FIRST, divide your class into two relay teams.

THEN, give each team a basketball and send them to a hoop.

NEXT, make two equally long ladders with your hula hoops in the middle of the gym with one final hula hoop at the end of the two ladders – put the chickens in the first 2 hoops.

FINALLY, place 3 Poly Dots in front of each basketball hoop with one close to the basket, another near the free throw line, and another furthest away by the 3-Point line.

How to Play: SHOOTS and LADDERS

OBJECT OF GAME – Get Your Chicken to the Top of the Ladder First!

The first student in line for each team dribbles the ball to their basket and takes one shot from one of the 3 colored Poly Dots.

If they miss the shot, they simply get the rebound and pass (chest or bounce) the ball to the next teammate in line.

  • If they make the shot from the dot CLOSEST to the basket they move their chicken up one position on the ladder.
  • If they make it from the MIDDLE dot, they move their chicken up two positions.
  • If they make it from the FURTHEST dot, they move their chicken up three positions AND they get to move the other team’s chicken BACK three positions.

*The first team to get their chicken to the top of the ladder WINS!

Bonus Game Teaching Tips

TIP 1:  I like to play this game after I have taught basketball dribbling, passing, and shooting skills. It’s a great assessment game.

TIP 2: If you don’t have chickens, you can easily just use 2 different colored bean bags or any 2 fun objects (beanie babies work great).

And if you don’t have enough hula hoops, you can just use more dots to make your ladders.

TIP 3:  The sweet spot for this game is 3rd – 12th grade but you can easily play with younger kids if you ring a hula hoop around the basket.

*This game is also a great strategy game, as well as a great game to focus on Teamwork and Sportsmanship too – A DEFINITE PE FAVORITE!
