SUPER FOWLING: Fun K-8 (Football Throwing + Bowling) PE Game

SUPER FOWLING is the ultimate K-8 (Football Throwing + Bowling) hybrid gym challenge kids go wild for!

Students hurl footballs to knock down bowling pins like a touchdown strike, which we call an OINK, improving throwing accuracy and power, all while cheering for teammates and having a TOTAL BLAST.

SUPER FOWLING: Fun K-8 (Football Throwing + Bowling) PE Game

Level Up your FOOTBALL SUPER BOWL Unit with this resource that is ideal for K-8 whole class activities, PE stations, indoor recess and field day games.

SUPER FOWLING or ‘Football Bowling’ combines FOOTBALL and BOWLING and focuses on key football throwing skills.

It also incorporates other key PE skills including: addition, scorekeeping, teamwork, classroom community, and sportsmanship.

I like to play this game with my PE students as a culmination to my bowling unit, and after I’ve taught overhand throwing, leading up to the Super Bowl in early February.

It works great as an overhand throwing skill assessment tool too.

SUPER FOWLING is a definite MUST-HAVE for your PE teacher toolkit.

Simply print the lesson plan and keep in your Instant PE Game Binder so you’re always prepared with quick, easy, and CRAZY FUN,GO-TO activities your students will beg you to play again and again!

Love 2 Teach and Learn

Hi there, it’s so great to meet you! I’m Mrs. T. (or you can call me Jen) – a Michigan mom, wife, new grandma (aka “Jemma”) and K-12 PE teacher who has also taught Kindergarten, 3rd, and 6th grades.

I love teaching PE class because I get to spend time telling silly sports jokes and exercising while laughing with my students.

I’m also on a serious mission to MAKE SCHOOL FUN AGAIN and this SUPER FOWLING physical education game is an awesome way to to just that!

READY! SET! LET’S PLAY!

Equipment Needed

SUPER FOWLING - Equipment Needed

For this game you will need:

  • BOWLING PINS (Enough Pins for Each Team to Each have 3-10 Pins)
  • FOOTBALLS (One for Each Team)
  • *OPTIONAL ITEMS* Carpeted Bowling Lanes, Scorecards, and Pencils

Super Fowling – Game Setup

SUPER FOWLING - Game Setup

FIRST, Divide your students into teams – 3 per team works great for this game.

NEXT, give each team a football, Scorecard/Pencil, and 3, 5, or 10 bowling pins (depending on how many you want to play with).

THEN, have students set up their pins in a pyramid formation.

FINALLY, have each team member stand on positions 1, 2, and 3 (See Diagram)

How to Play: SUPER FOWLING

SUPER FOWLING: Fun K-8 (Football Throwing + Bowling) PE Game

GAME FOCUS: This is a FOOTBALL + BOWLING combination game that focuses on improving football throwing accuracy.

  • Explain to your students that there are 4 quarters in this game (like in football).
  • Each FOWLER gets 2 attempts per turn (like in bowling) to knock all the pins down.
  • If they knock all pins down on their 1st attempt, they do not get a 2nd attempt (like a STRIKE in bowling). We call that an “OINK”
  • Fowlers take turns rotating in  a CLOCKWISE direction with Position #1 moving to Position #2, Position #2 moving to Position #3, and Position #3 moving to Position #1 (See Diagram Above)

POSITION #1 is the FOWLER, POSITION #2 is the SCOREKEEPER, and POSITION #3 is the PIN SETTER and the NEXT BOWLER.

*After 4 quarters of play, have your students add up their fowling scores and record on their scorecard. You can get my SCORECARD Right Here!

Bonus Game Teaching Tips

TIP 1: Depending on how many bowling pins you have, feel free to play this game with 3, 5, or 10 pins at each lane.

TIP 2: Depending on the age/grade of your students, feel free to adjust the distance to the pins, as well as the type and size of footballs that you choose to use.

TIP 3: To keep kids safe, make sure that students in Positions 2 (Scorekeeper) and 3 (Pin Setter) aren’t standing too close to the pins when the fowler throws the football.

I place Poly Spots halfway down the lane (one on each side) so they know exactly where to stand.

I also have the students who are standing in positions 2 and 3 both give a thumbs up👍 to the fowler before they take their turn, signaling the pins are back up and everybody is back in a safe position and ready to go!

TIP 4: I only use the scorecard with grades 2-8. No scorekeeping for K-1.
