SWISH🏀 TAC🏀 TOE

Hi there, it’s so great to meet you! I’m Mrs. T. or you can call me Jen – a Michigan mom, wife, new grandma (aka “Jemma”) and K-12 PE teacher who is on a mission to MAKE SCHOOL FUN AGAIN!
Keep your physical education students active, working together, and cheering as they practice accurate basketball shooting, strategy, and teamwork in this low-prep, high-energy basketball activity!
SWISH TAC TOE is a total blast! So, if you’re ready, let’s do this!
READY! SET! LET’S PLAY!
How to Play: SWISH TAC TOE
Equipment Needed
SUPPLIES and Equipment Needed for Swish Tac Toe Include:
- 2 BASKETBALL HOOPS and 2 BASKETBALLS
- 12 BEAN BAGS (6 of two different colors)
- 2 SMALL BASKETS or BUCKETS
- 9 HULA HOOPS
Game Set-Up
FIRST, divide your class into two equal groups and send each team to a different basketball hoop.
NEXT, give each team one basketball and a basket/bucket filled with six (same-colored) bean bags.
THEN, have each team form a line off to the side of their basketball hoop.
FINALLY, set up a 3X3 Tic-Tac-Toe Grid with the 9 Hoops in the middle of the gym, between both basketball hoops.
Game Instructions
OBJECT OF THE GAME: Be the first team to get 3 bean bags in a row – Vertically, Horizontally, or Diagonally.
When the game begins, the first person in line for each team will dribble the ball to their hoop and take ONE shot from wherever they want.
- If they MISS their shot, they simply get the rebound and pass the ball (chest or bounce) to the next teammate in line.
- If they MAKE their shot, they get to grab a bean bag from their bucket, to the Tic-Tac-Toe grid and place the bean bag on the game board.
*The first team to get 3 bean bags in a row WINS the Swish Tac Toe game!
Game Tips
Here are a few bonus tips to make this awesome game even better.
📌TIP #1: For younger students (K-3) you can use playground balls instead of regular basketballs and have them shoot closer to the basket.
📌TIP #2: I also like to ring a hula hoop around the basket to help younger kids feel successful.
📌TIP #3: This is a great game for practicing free throw shooting – instead of allowing kids to shoot from anywhere around the basket, you can require that they shoot free throws instead.
📌TIP #4: This game also makes a great Basketball PE Station and is included in my 10 Mega Fun Basketball PE Stations Resource.
This low prep, minimal equipment game is also a very easy emergency PE lesson plan to leave for a substitute teacher. Just print off, gather the equipment and you’re good to go.
