So today I’m sharing 10 PE classroom management tricks I wish I knew my first year teaching PE.

#1 Teach PE Routines BEFORE You Teach Games

Teach PE Routines BEFORE You Teach Games

One of the biggest mistakes I made as a new PE teacher was assuming students knew what they were supposed to do.

They don’t! 😂

Students need to be explicitly taught how to enter the gym, where to sit or stand, how to get equipment, what to do when the teacher needs their attention, how to clean up, and how to line up and leave the gym.

And don’t wait several weeks to figure this out like I did!

Before your FIRST DAY OF PE, YOU need to be super clear about what your PE routines and expectations are—and then start teaching and practicing them immediately.

Even your Kindergarten PE students can learn consistent routines when you keep them simple and practice them regularly.

Trust me: spending extra time teaching routines at the beginning of the year can save you SO much instructional time later.

#2 Choose ONE Attention Signal—and Stick With It!

Choose ONE Attention Signal—and Stick With It!

Every PE teacher needs a simple signal that means: STOP. LOOK. LISTEN.

Your signal could be a whistle, turning off the music, calling “FREEZE!”, raising your hand, briefly flicking the lights, ringing a bell, clapping a pattern, or using a fun call-and-response phrase.

What you choose isn’t nearly as important as using it consistently.

For me, music has been one of my greatest PE classroom management game-changers.

I use a very simple rule:

MUSIC ON = Your Turn
MUSIC OFF = My Turn

When the music is playing, students know it’s their time to move, play, talk, laugh, and have fun. When the music stops, they know it’s time to stop and listen to me.

Simple. Consistent. EASY PEASY!

#3 Give Every Student a “Magic Number”

Give Every Student a “Magic Number”

This is such a simple PE teacher organization trick, but I use it ALL THE TIME.

At the beginning of the school year, I assign each student a number based on alphabetical order – last names. I call them their Magic Numbers, and students keep the same number throughout the school year.

Those numbers can help with:

  • Attendance
  • Line-up order
  • Squad spots
  • Station rotations
  • Choosing taggers
  • Organizing groups
  • Assigning student jobs
  • Keeping track of student leaders

And if you get a new student during the year? Just give them the next available number. No big deal!

Magic Numbers take almost no effort to establish, but once your students learn them, you’ll be amazed at how many different ways you can use them to make your PE classes more organized.

#4 Use Moveable Poly Spots for Assigned PE Spots

Use Moveable Poly Spots for Assigned PE Spots

PE teachers, I tried EVERYTHING to create assigned student spots in my gym.

Paint. Floor stickers. Tape.

And let’s just say my custodians were NOT impressed. 😂

Eventually, I discovered a ridiculously simple solution: numbered poly spots.

Figure out the size of your largest class and purchase that many poly spots. Add number stickers to the middle, cover the numbers with clear packaging tape, and you’re ready to go!

Students grab the poly spot matching their Magic Number and place it within my designated warm-up area. They get a little freedom to choose where they exercise while I still have an organized system for every student.

At the end of warm-ups, students quickly collect the spots and put them back in numerical order for the next class.

No permanently marked gym floor. No peeling stickers. No angry summer custodians.

WIN-WIN-WIN! 😂

#5 PE Fitness Stars are Pure Magic

PE Fitness Stars are Pure Magic

If I had to choose one system that has made my PE classes easier and WAY MORE FUN, PE Fitness Stars would be near the top of my list.

A Fitness Star is basically my student leader for the day. They might:

  • Lead warm-up exercises
  • Help set up equipment
  • Choose teams
  • Help select taggers
  • Assist with classroom jobs
  • Get to be first in line

And here’s the magic part…

Suddenly you don’t have 15 kids yelling, “CAN I HELP?!”

Everyone knows they’ll eventually get a turn!

I simply rotate my Fitness Stars using our Magic Numbers, so it’s easy to keep track and everyone gets an opportunity to be a leader.

I also love my High-Five System. My Fitness Star can high-five two classmates to help lead warm-ups, become taggers, assist with equipment, or complete another special job.

NO COMPLAINING! NO FIGHTING! NO ARGUING! It’s a truly beautiful thing!

Students LOVE being given responsibility—and giving them appropriate leadership opportunities can help create a stronger PE classroom community at the same time.

#6 Keep Your PE Rules RIDICULOUSLY Simple

Keep Your PE Rules RIDICULOUSLY Simple

You do NOT need 59 different gym rules hanging on your wall.

Because here’s something I’ve learned:

A confused mind says NO.

Instead, I tell my students that I really have only ONE big rule:

RESPECT 4

Respect Yourself.
Respect the Teacher.
Respect Others.
Respect the Equipment.

That’s it!

RESPECT 4 - Love 2 Teach and Learn

Almost every behavior problem that comes up in PE can be connected back to one of those four areas.

Simple expectations are easier for students to remember, easier for you to reinforce, and much easier to use consistently throughout the school year.

#7 Find a FUN and Unique Way to Connect With Your Students

Find a FUN and Unique Way to Connect With Your Students

Classroom management isn’t only about controlling difficult student behavior.

It’s also about preventing behavior problems by building relationships.

Find something fun, silly, or quirky that helps your students connect with YOU.

For me?

It’s FOOD EARRINGS. 😂🌽🍔🍜

Yep. Cheeseburgers. Sushi. Ramen noodles. Corn on the cob. You name it!

It’s ridiculous—and my students LOVE it.

You certainly don’t need to wear hamburgers on your ears, but find your thing. Maybe it’s silly sports jokes, crazy socks, music, a rubber chicken, a funny warm-up tradition, or something else that’s authentically YOU.

Those little traditions help keep your gym lighthearted and welcoming while showing students that school can absolutely be a place where we learn AND have fun.

#8 Create a Calming Corner in Your Gym

Create a Calming Corner in Your Gym

A PE calming corner doesn’t need to be fancy or take up a huge section of your gym.

You simply need a designated place where a student can step away for a few minutes, regroup, calm down, and return to class ready to make better choices.

My calming corner includes simple items such as a comfy pillow, stuffed animals, Rubik’s Cube, coloring and drawing supplies, fidgets, and a three-minute sand timer.

The important part is establishing clear expectations and boundaries for how and when students use the space.

A calming corner isn’t about letting students avoid PE. It’s about giving students an appropriate strategy for regulating themselves BEFORE frustration turns into a bigger behavior problem.

#9 Give Students Choice Time—and Make Them Earn It!

Give Students Choice Time—and Make Them Earn It!

One of my FAVORITE parts of PE class is Choice Time.

I typically give students about 8–10 minutes at the end of class when they can choose from approved games, equipment, or activities.

And PE teachers…

THE KIDS ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

Students get a little ownership over their PE experience while socializing, building friendships, practicing teamwork, and simply enjoying movement together.

But here’s the classroom management secret:

They earn it.

My students know that participating, following directions, making good choices, and transitioning efficiently help us get to Choice Time.

Choice Time still has clear rules and safety expectations, but it’s also one of my favorite opportunities to build relationships with students.

Instead of standing on the sidelines, I can shoot baskets with them, jump rope, join a game, practice a skill, or simply talk with a student who needs a little extra attention that day.

It might look like “free time,” but some of my BEST relationship-building happens during those few minutes.

#10 Build Relationships BEFORE You Need Them ❤️

Build Relationships BEFORE You Need Them

And finally, this might be the most important PE classroom management strategy on this entire list.

Build relationships with your students BEFORE there’s a problem.

Learn their names. Ask questions. Laugh with them. Play games alongside them. Find out what they enjoy outside of school. Notice when they’re having a rough day. Give them a high-five when they leave your gym.

Those tiny moments may not look like classroom management…

But they absolutely ARE.

It’s much easier to redirect a student when you’ve already developed a positive relationship with them. When students know you see them, care about them, and genuinely enjoy having them in your class, they’re much more likely to trust you when you need to correct or redirect their behavior.

Don’t wait until a student is struggling to start building that connection.

Build the relationship BEFORE you need it. ❤️

Class Dismissed

Great Physical Education classroom management isn’t about controlling every second of class or creating a giant list of rules.

It’s about developing simple systems, predictable routines, clear expectations, and strong relationships that allow students to feel safe, successful, and excited to come to PE.

And please don’t feel like you need to implement all 10 of these PE Classroom Management Tricks tomorrow!
