Rollin’ in the Dough is a fun, fast-paced, K-5 underhand rolling PE game that turns practicing rolling, accuracy, aim, force and control into an exciting team challenge!
Students take turns underhand rolling a ball toward cups or buckets scattered around the gym, hoping to hit one or two and collect the hidden play money underneath.
Hi there, it’s so great to meet you! I’m Mrs. T. (or you can call me Jen) – a Michigan mom, wife, new grandma (aka “Jemma”) K-12 PE teacher, blogger (Love 2 Teach and Learn) and author of 59 CRAZY FUN Elementary PE Games that ROCK!
I love teaching PE class because I get to spend time telling Silly SPORTS JOKES and exercising, while laughing with my students.
I’m also on a serious mission to MAKE SCHOOL FUN AGAIN and I believe physical education class is the ABSOLUTE BEST WAY to do just that!
READY! SET! LET’S GET ROLLING!
Since the main PE focus skill for this game is UNDERHAND ROLLING it’s important to communicate that to your students before playing the game.
I like to use I CAN STATEMENTS with my students.
The learning target or “I CAN” Statement that I teach to my students and have them repeat back to me before playing this awesome underhand rolling PE Game is as follows:
- I CAN… roll a ball underhand toward my target using good form.
The kid-friendly cue words and phrases that I use to help my students improve their underhand rolling skills are:
- EYES ON TARGET
- STEP WITH OPPOSITE FOOT
- STAY LOW & FOLLOW THROUGH

EQUIPMENT NEEDED
For this underhand rolling PE game you will need the following:
- 4 DIFFERENT COLORED SMALL BASKETS
- 4 TENNIS BALLS
- FAKE MONEY (I get mine from the Dollar Tree for $1.25)
- SEVERAL Speed Stacks Inc. JUMBO CUPS or LARGE BUCKETS
- KIDS READY TO HAVE A TOTAL BLAST
ROLLIN’ IN THE DOUGH – Game Setup
FIRST, divide your class into 4 relay teams.
THEN, give each team a small colored collection basket and a tennis ball.
NEXT, have them line up with their teams at one end of the gym behind their team basket.
FINALLY, scatter your Jumbo Cups or buckets upside down around the gym. Hide a piece of play money underneath each cup—$1, $5, $10, $20, $100, etc.
How to Play: ROLLIN’ IN THE DOUGH
OBJECT OF THE GAME – Collect the most money as a team.
When the game begins, the first person in line for each team will underhand roll their ball toward the cups/buckets, aiming and trying to hit one (or sometimes two) with their ball.
- If they MISS and their ball doesn’t hit a bucket, they quickly grab the ball, throw it or run it back and get it to the next teammate in line.
- If their roll is successful and it hits a cup/bucket, they quickly pick up the cup/bucket and if there is money underneath, they take it, leaving the cup/bucket in place, run it back to their team and place it inside their team collection basket.
- Students in line who are waiting for their turn should be paying attention and watching where the money is so they can communicate with their teammates about where they should aim.
The game ends when the teacher calls time or when the teacher notices that most of the money has been collected.
To extend the game, be sneaky and simply add money to buckets while the game is in progress.

GAME TEACHING TIPS
- 📌TIP 1: This underhand rolling PE game can easily be played with K-5 students and even middle and high school kids. Just simply move the buckets/cups closer or further away based on age/skill level. Additionally, instead of worrying about money counting for K-2, simply place a plastic gold coin under the buckets instead.
- 📌TIP 2: The play money from the dollar store works great for this game.
- 📌TIP 3: Sometimes I like to add random cards under the buckets for extra fun with my older students (Take $100 from the team of your choice, etc.) It adds an extra exciting twist.
- 📌TIP 4: It’s a great game for assessing your students’ underhand rolling skills and it’s also the perfect lead up game to play right before your bowling unit.
