SCRABALL RELAY
Hey, PE Teachers – Are you struggling to find TEAM GAMES that are EASY, CREATIVE, and FUN, and also provide your students an opportunity to improve Key Basketball skills?
Look no further than… SCRABALL.
Designed with cross-curricular learning in mind, SCRA-BALL helps students strengthen basketball shooting, vocabulary, literacy, spelling, math, critical thinking, and motor skills.
SCRA-BALL combines basketball shooting with Scrabble Word-Making (and math) and is an ABSOLUTE BLAST!
The basketball lovers get to do their thing and the word and math masters in class get a chance to shine too.
I’ve played this PE game twice for an observation and both times my principal totally LOVED it.

In this post love2teachandlearn (Mrs. T.) will share every awesome detail related to how to play this incredible physical education game.
Hi there, it’s so great to meet you! I’m Mrs. T. (or you can call me Jen) – a Michigan mom, wife, new grandma (aka “Jemma”) and K-12 PE teacher who has also taught Kindergarten, 3rd, and 6th grades.
I love teaching PE class because I get to spend time telling silly SPORTS JOKES and exercising, while laughing with my students.
I’m also on a serious mission to MAKE SCHOOL FUN AGAIN and this physical education game is an awesome way to do just that!
READY! SET! LET’S #makeschoolfunagain
Equipment Needed
For this game you will need the following:
- 2 BASKETBALLS
- 2 PENCILS
- 2 POLY SPOTS
- 2 SCRA-BALL SCORECARDS or 2 PIECES PLAIN PAPER
- SCRA-BALL LETTER CARDS or COLORED STICKY NOTES
SCRABALL – Game Setup
FIRST, divide your class into two teams.
THEN, give each team a basketball and send them to a hoop.
NEXT, place the letter cards in the middle of the gym (face up as shown in the diagram) separating them into three groups – Vowels, Consonants, and Most Common.
FINALLY, place one Poly Spot on the Free Throw Line (Vowel Line) at each basket.
How to Play: SCRA-BALL
OBJECT OF GAME- Be the first team to collect 10 letters and create words with the highest total point value.
The first student in line for each team dribbles the ball to their basket and takes one shot from anywhere they want.
If they miss the shot, they simply get the rebound and pass the ball to the next teammate in line.
If they make the shot they run to the middle and grab a letter card.
- They can ONLY choose a VOWEL CARD if they make their shot from the free throw (vowel line) or behind. All shots made in front of the Poly Spot/close to the basket get a Consonant or a “Most Common” Letter Card.
When one team collects 10 letter cards, the basketball shooting stops and no more letter cards can be collected.
Give each team 5 minutes to make as many words as they can with the letters they collected and record on the scorecard.
The team with the most total points WINS!
Bonus Game Teaching Tips
📌TIP 1: It’s very helpful if you separate the letter cards by color, using 3 different colors (as shown) for the 3 different categories. You can either print the cards included in my lesson plan out on colored cardstock or you can use 3 different colored sticky notes and write them yourself.
Here are the Scrabble Letter Values for you!
📌TIP 2: The “sweet spot” for SCRABALL is 3rd-12th grade, however, for K-2, I have used playground balls instead of basketballs, placed a hula hoop around the basket for easier shooting, did not use the scorecard and instead just had them collect as many letters of the alphabet as they could.
📌It works great for other skill practice games too, especially underhand throwing games.
📌TIP 3: This is a great game to play during a formal observation (incorporates fitness, basketball skills, ELA) -your principal will Absolutely LOVE it!
